Now Open: World-Class Emergency Care Comes to East Hampton

A new era in East End healthcare has begun: the Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department is officially open, delivering world-class emergency care to the South Fork. As one of the few freestanding emergency departments in New York State, this state-of-the-art facility marks a transformative moment for the region. In its first two weeks alone, the EHED served over 392 patients, a clear and early sign of how urgently this facility was needed.

Located at 400 Pantigo Place, the 23,000-square-foot, off-campus extension of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department is designed to provide round-the-clock, life-saving care—365 days a year, including holidays—for residents and visitors throughout the South Fork.

“Every private room, every piece of equipment, and every workflow is designed to ensure the highest possible standard of care for our neighbors, family, friends, and guests,” said Emily Mastaler, Chief Administrative Officer of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, during a ceremonial ribbon-cutting held earlier this spring. “The addition of the East Hampton Emergency Department not only assures emergent care for this community but also strengthens our continuum of care.”

From cardiac monitoring in every exam room to a dedicated resuscitation space, two isolation rooms, and fast-track treatment areas for pediatric, obstetrics/gynecology, and general patients, the facility is equipped with advanced diagnostic technologies and life-saving treatments. The department also houses a comprehensive imaging center with MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray. An on-site ambulance ensures immediate transport when hospital admission is required

Sustainability is central to the vision: rooftop solar panels, a rain-catch garden, and native landscaping help reduce environmental impact while supporting community health.

The journey to opening began with a vision from the hospital’s leadership, followed by town approval and the launch of a capital campaign in 2019. Despite challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Southampton Hospital Foundation, in partnership with the East Hampton Healthcare Foundation, raised funds from more than 500 generous donors and secured a $10 million state grant.

“We thank our donors for their generosity and commitment to this ambitious project,” said Jim Forbes, Chair, Southampton Hospital Association and Chair of the East Hampton Emergency Department Campaign Committee. “More than $32 million has been raised to date, and we are grateful for the $10 million state grant made to Stony Brook University Hospital, as well as the unwavering support of the Town of East Hampton and its residents throughout this planning process.”

With its doors now open, the Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department is more than a new facility—it’s a pivotal investment in the health and future of the East End.

Philanthropic support remains imperative as we continue to invest in exceptional care for the East End community.
