Tips for Staying Motivated During the Winter Months

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, staying motivated to exercise in winter can be extra challenging. When the temptation to stay cozy indoors kicks in and you need a little extra motivation, here are a few tips from Patricia Hernandez, Coordinator, The Ed & Phyllis Davis Wellness Institute, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital:

Set realistic goals
Winter can bring its own set of challenges and that’s ok! You can adjust your wellness and exercise goals to align with the season.  Adapt your expectations, and focus on smaller achievements so you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Find a workout buddy
A workout buddy can make a huge difference as far as motivation.  Having someone to share your fitness journey with can provide encouragement and accountability.  A shared goal will make you more likely to stay on track.

Embrace the outdoors
Don’t let the cold weather deter you from outdoor activities.  A brisk walk can boost your mood and get your blood pumping.  The fresh air even in small doses can elevate your serotonin levels and improve your overall well-being.

Turn on a light as soon as you wake up
Yes, it is quite dark now in the early hours of the morning.  Turning on a light helps your body know it’s time to wake up and can help you feel more alert and energized.  You are also less likely to hit that snooze button.

Sign up for a race or class
Whether it’s a race, or competition, finding an upcoming fitness event will motivate you to get moving.
