East Hampton Emergency Department Makes Immediate Impact

The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department (EHED) began welcoming patients on May 22, 2025—just in time for Memorial Day weekend—fulfilling its mission to deliver life-saving care to residents and visitors of the South Fork.

The impact was immediate. In its first two weeks, the facility treated nearly 400, underscoring its importance. By Labor Day, over 4,700 patients had visited the EHED.

In just a few months, the EHED has become an indispensable resource, strengthening the region’s overall healthcare system, improving ambulance travel times, and easing patient volume at the Southampton ED. “The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department is successfully managing the critical needs of those who live furthest east on the South Fork, which has resulted in the planned lessening of patient volume at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department,” said Darin Wiggins, Vice Chair and Site Director for Emergency Medicine at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “This allows for an increase in admittance to our Southampton ED for those further west, who are in need of emergency care.”

The state-of-the-art 23,000-square-foot facility serves as an off-campus extension of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Emergency Department. Designed to deliver comprehensive care, it features cardiac monitoring in every exam room, a dedicated resuscitation space, two isolation rooms, and fast-track treatment areas for pediatric, obstetrics/gynecology, and general patients. The ED also includes a full imaging center with MRI, CT, ultrasound, and X-ray, with an on-site ambulance available for immediate transport for patients requiring hospital admission.

“Providing 24/7 emergency services in East Hampton is part of Stony Brook Medicine’s commitment to expand access to world-class healthcare throughout the East End,” noted Emily Mastaler, Chief Administrative Officer, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “In addition to serving those in the Town of East Hampton, the East Hampton Emergency Department helps to reduce emergent patient volume in the Southampton ED, particularly during the busy summer season when the population on the South Fork increases three times that of the colder and winter months.”

“Our emergency departments in East Hampton and Southampton are fully staffed with highly skilled and dedicated Stony Brook Medicine emergency specialists and professionals who are ready to provide critical care,” added Sheryll Allbright, RN, Director of the Emergency Department at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

With advanced technology, dedicated staff, and immediate impact, the EHED represents both a medical and community milestone for the East End.

As the EHED continues to serve thousands each year, it stands as a milestone achievement for healthcare access on the East End.

The Stony Brook East Hampton Emergency Department is located at 400 Pantigo Place in East Hampton.
