Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Celebrates Top National Recognitions

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital (SBSH) has recently earned multiple prestigious accolades, showcasing its commitment to excellence.

For the third consecutive year, Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) has earned a place among America’s 50 Best Hospitals as ranked by Healthgrades. This honor places SBM in the elite top one percent of hospitals nationwide. Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital collectively share this recognition.

Healthgrades assessed over 30 conditions and procedures, evaluating risk-adjusted outcomes at approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide to determine the top hospitals for 2025.

“This distinction reflects our shared commitment across Stony Brook Medicine to bring exceptional care to our patients,” William A. Wertheim, MD, MBA, Executive Vice President, Stony Brook Medicine, said in a press release. “This is only possible when we collectively maintain the highest standards of quality throughout the organization.”

“I am grateful to all of our healthcare professionals for their dedication to excellence,” noted Carol A. Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital, in a press release. “Our steady increase in rankings — from the top 250 since 2015, to the top 100 since 2019, and now the top 50 for three years in a row — can give patients the confidence in knowing that Stony Brook delivers consistent, high-quality care.”

In a demonstration of its continued excellence in patient safety, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital was awarded its second ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade of 2024 by The Leapfrog Group, making it one of only 17 hospitals in New York to achieve ‘A’ ratings in both the fall and spring assessments. This achievement highlights the hospital’s unwavering commitment to safety and quality care. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.

“We are honored to have again earned the nation’s top distinction for patient safety, an ‘A’ from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade,” said Emily Mastaler, Chief Administrative Officer at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “Receiving an ‘A’ grade both in the fall and the spring is a testament to the relentless efforts of our team, who ensure our patients’ safety 24/7, all year round.”

Further emphasizing the quality of care at SBSH, 114* physicians within the Stony Brook Medicine network, were named to the Castle Connolly Top Doctors 2025 list. This recognition includes doctors across 48 specialties, highlighting the top seven percent of physicians in the U.S.
